What Is Collagen and Why Do We Need It?

August 23rd, 2015

Learn about Renew Woman’s™ options for supporting healthy collagen production in your body.

If you have done any research at all into anti-aging products for your skin, you have no doubt heard about collagen and its role in keeping skin healthy, firm, and youthful. But did you know that this protein is found many other places in the body besides the skin? In fact, it is the most abundant protein found in the human body, representing 30 percent of all our proteins and 20 percent of our body mass.

Why Do We Need Collagen?

Collagen is basically the structure that holds the entire body together. As you know, it is found in the skin, but also in the bones, muscles, tendons, and connective tissues such as joint cartilage. Some forms of collagen are even used to create protective coverings for the kidneys and other delicate organs.

Collagen is very important for the regrowth and replacement of skin cells, because it forms the network within the dermis to which these new cells can attach. When this network starts to sag due to declining collagen production, lines and wrinkles are the obvious and direct result.

Protect the Collagen You Have

Collagen production will decline significantly in all women by menopause. However, the decline will be hastened by exposure to the following stressors, so try to avoid:

  • A High-Sugar Diet: When you eat too much sugar, a process called glycation takes place, causing compounds called AGEs to form. AGEs have a damaging effect on nearby proteins and can weaken collagen.
  • Smoking: Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarette smoke are bad for skin in several ways. Not only do they interfere with the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells; they also damage collagen proteins.
  • UV damage: Another serious threat to healthy collagen is sun exposure. Sun damage can accelerate collagen breakdown, eventually leading to the formation of an enzyme that can break down even more collagen.

Boost Collagen Production Naturally

While avoiding the above stressors will help protect existing collagen, you will still need to take other steps if you want to regenerate sufficient collagen to provide a younger look for your skin and support the strength and resiliency of your connective tissues. Renew Woman™ has several different treatment options that can help you accomplish this:

Nutritional Advice: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, proline, copper, and anthocyanidins are all examples of nutrients that are considered collagen supportive. Our certified nutritionists can help you understand how to incorporate these nutrients into your diet through different foods and supplements.

Collagen Serum: We offer an exclusive Collagen Retinol Facial Serum that not only stimulates the production of new collagen deep within skin, but also hydrates, repairs, and protects for a more youthful skin tone.

Anti-Aging Cream: We offer a skin cream specially formulated to deliver estriol and progesterone–two hormones vital for supporting youthful collagen production—directly to the skin that needs it most. This cream can help improve elasticity and reduce wrinkles and pore size for younger-looking skin.

Hormone Replacement Therapy: In order to deliver the collagen-supportive benefits of estrogen and progesterone to your entire system, not just your skin, hormone replacement therapy will be needed.
