Understanding Skin Aging

February 27th, 2017

Learn why skin ages and what you can do about it

Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, sun spots, dry spots, and thin skin are problems that affect everyone to some degree as we age. However, just because it happens to everyone doesn’t make it any easier to accept when it’s your skin that’s starting to show its age.

The good news is, once you understand the root causes of skin aging, you can also understand how to slow and even reverse it to some degree using a combination of strategies such as lifestyle changes, skin serums, and hormone treatments.

Why Skin Ages and What To Do About It

Environmental Factors: Daily life can expose skin to a variety of stressors. One of the worst is the sun. UV damage can not only cause sun spots or discoloration, but also contribute to wrinkles by damaging the collagen that should be helping to keep your skin firm and elastic. If you smoke, the nicotine and other chemicals will do even more damage to collagen, as well as prevent your skin from receiving the oxygen and nutrients it needs to repair and renew itself.

The best way to protect your skin from UV rays and cigarette smoke is simply to limit exposure. Stop smoking and use sunscreen on a daily basis. Keeping your skin hydrated with a quality moisturizer will also help keep your skin looking younger.

Nutrition: The food you eat can both help and harm your skin. Foods rich in Vitamins C, A, and E are considered especially nourishing for skin, while high fructose foods can actually be bad for skin. Fructose will react with amino acids in your body in a process called glycation, resulting in the formation of compounds called AGEs. As the immune system struggles to get rid of these AGEs, it will mount an inflammatory response that will damage other cells. Proteins such as collagen are especially likely to be casualties of this process.

Changing your diet to include more antioxidant vitamins and less fructose is a very important first step towards controlling skin aging. However, for an even bigger nourishing boost, you should consider utilizing a skin serum that can deliver vitamins and nutrients directly to the areas of skin that need them most. Renew Youth™ has several skin serums for you to try.

Hormones: When you were younger, healthy levels of estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid in the body helped your skin to produce plenty of natural oil for moisture and collagen and elastin for firmness and resiliency. Unfortunately, all these hormones will decline with age. This is a major reason why skin becomes dry, saggy, and wrinkled with age.

By bringing these important hormones back to healthy levels, you can promote healthier, more youthful looking skin. Women may wish to start out with a topical estrogen cream that can help restore collagen in the specific areas where it is needed the most. This cream is mild enough that it will not affect overall hormonal balance. Alternatively, men and women can opt for complete hormone replacement therapy that will balance all their vital hormones and address all signs and symptoms of aging, not just skin aging.
