Testosterone therapy for women has been making a lot of headlines lately.
Women everywhere are sharing their experiences with testosterone replacement, which has resulted in this lifechanging treatment finally getting the attention it deserves.
But here’s the thing:
While testosterone replacement for women may be news to many people, it’s not news to us.
At Renew Youth, we’ve been providing testosterone therapy to women since 1999. For more than 25 years, we have watched countless women reclaim their energy, libido, mental acuity, and overall vitality through properly administered testosterone therapy.
So, what’s fact and what’s fiction when it comes to women and testosterone? Allow us to set the record straight.
Fiction: Testosterone Is a Male Hormone
This is perhaps the biggest myth of all.
Yes, men produce much higher levels of testosterone than women. But women absolutely need testosterone for optimal health.
In fact, women produce testosterone throughout their lives in amounts that are essential for:
- Energy production and stamina
- Muscle mass and strength
- Bone density
- Mental acuity and focus
- Mood stability
- Libido and sexual function
- Metabolism and body composition
When testosterone levels decline during perimenopause and menopause (and sometimes earlier), women often experience profound changes in how they feel and function.
Fact: Women’s Testosterone Levels Decline with Age
Just as estrogen and progesterone production decreases as women age, so does testosterone.
For many women, testosterone levels begin dropping during their 30s or 40s. By the time menopause arrives, testosterone production has declined significantly.
And the resulting symptoms can be dramatic:
- Crushing fatigue that no amount of sleep will fix
- Loss of muscle mass, despite sufficient exercise
- Stubborn weight gain, especially around the midsection
- Vanishing sex drive
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Depression, anxiety, irritability, and mood swings
- Decreased motivation and drive
Fiction: DHEA Is a Good Substitute for Testosterone
We’re seeing many providers prescribe DHEA for women instead of testosterone, claiming that DHEA will convert to testosterone once it’s in the body.
While DHEA is indeed a precursor to testosterone, and it has the potential for converting to testosterone, the rate at which this conversion occurs is inconsistent at best (if it happens at all). And as women age, the potential for conversion decreases even further.
The reality? In our 25+ years of experience, DHEA supplementation alone rarely raises testosterone to optimal levels in women who are truly deficient.
If you need testosterone, there’s no substitute for testosterone replacement therapy.
Fact: Testosterone Therapy Can Transform Women’s Lives
The women we’ve treated over the past quarter century consistently report remarkable improvements when their testosterone levels are optimized:
- They get their energy back. That bone-deep fatigue lifts, and they feel like themselves again.
- They regain muscle tone and strength. Working out becomes effective again, rather than being an exercise in frustration.
- They lose stubborn weight. When combined with healthy lifestyle habits, balanced testosterone helps the body to burn excess fat.
- Their mind clears. Brain fog dissipates, and mental sharpness returns.
- Their mood stabilizes. The irritability, anxiety, and depression that plagued them improves dramatically.
- Their libido returns. Many women report a renewed interest in sex and intimacy, sometimes after years of disinterest.
Fiction: Testosterone Will Make Women “Masculine”
This fear keeps many women from seeking the treatment they desperately need.
The truth is that when testosterone is prescribed in appropriate amounts for women, and when treatment is properly monitored, it will not cause masculine characteristics. What we’re talking about here is restoring testosterone to healthy, physiological levels that support a woman’s wellbeing.
When administered correctly, women enjoy all the benefits of testosterone without side effects.
Fact: Proper Administration and Monitoring Are Essential
Here’s where many providers fall short. Testosterone therapy for women requires:
- Expertise—Your provider must have substantial experience prescribing testosterone to women specifically.
- Customization—Dosing must be individualized to each woman’s unique needs. One size does not fit all.
- Proper delivery methods—Topical application or injections are the safest and most effective methods of delivery. Oral testosterone is hard on the liver. Pellet therapy creates inconsistent dosing and complications.
- Regular monitoring—Lab testing at six-month intervals (at a minimum) ensures levels remain optimal and safe over time.
Without these elements in place, treatment won’t deliver the results you’re looking for.
Why the Recent Buzz?
So why is everyone suddenly talking about women and testosterone?
Partly because younger providers are finally catching up to what we’ve known for decades. Partly because women are becoming more vocal about demanding the care they need. And partly because the research continues to validate what we’ve seen clinically for 25 years.
Regardless of the reason(s), we’re glad the conversation is happening. Too many women have suffered needlessly with symptoms that could have been relieved through proper hormone optimization.
Are You Ready to Experience the Difference?
If you’re struggling with fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, mood issues, or lost libido, testosterone deficiency could be to blame.
But if you’re considering treatment, don’t settle for providers who are just jumping on the bandwagon or who refuse to prescribe testosterone altogether. Trust the experts who have pioneered this treatment for women.
