Staying Healthy During the Holidays

November 9th, 2023

If you’re like many people, you’ve worked hard this year toward maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, managing stress…

But then…just as you’re feeling good about your progress…the holiday season threatens to thwart your efforts. Food and alcohol are abundant, stress levels are high, and late nights are common.

Before you panic about backsliding on your healthy habits, do two things:

  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Make a plan that allows you to enjoy the holidays without giving up on your healthy habits.

Here are some practical strategies for having a holiday season that is healthy, but also enjoyable.

Diet Strategies:

  1. Mindful Eating

Eat slowly. Take small bites and chew thoroughly. Really savor your food. Not only will you get more enjoyment from your food, you’re also more likely to notice when you’re full so you don’t overeat.

  1. Portion Control

Your eyes are likely to be bigger than your stomach if you go into holiday gatherings hungry. Try having a light snack beforehand. Beyond that, have smaller portions, and give yourself time to feel full before going back for seconds. If you wait 20 to 30 minutes, there’s a good chance you’ll decide to pass on another helping.

  1. Balance Your Plate

A balanced plate will include a mix of lean protein, whole grains, and colorful vegetables. These foods will help to control hunger and stabilize blood sugar. And try to keep simple carbohydrates to a minimum.

  1. Hydrate

Sometimes what your body interprets as hunger is actually thirst. Try to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking water will also help you to feel fuller. Alternate alcohol and other beverages with glasses of water to reduce the likelihood of overindulging in drinks that are calorie dense.

  1. Plan Your Indulgences

Avoid feeling deprived by indulging strategically. Just have the carb-heavy treats that are your absolute favorites, have them in smaller amounts, and eat them slowly.

Exercise Strategies:

  1. Schedule Your Exercise
  2. Do your best to maintain your exercise routine during the holiday season, even if your schedule is busier than usual. Whether it’s a quick workout at home, a brisk walk around the neighborhood, or a short session at the gym, being consistent will help to offset any additional calories you might be eating.

  3. Choose Holiday Activities That Get You Moving
  4. Turn holiday activities into exercise opportunities. Whether it’s ice skating, dancing, or winter hikes, find ways to stay active while enjoying the season.

  5. HIIT Workouts
  6. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) combines short periods of intense exercise with periods of less intense exercise. HIIT is an effective way to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time. HIIT can also help to boost your metabolism.

  7. Make Exercise Social
  8. Encourage your family and friends to do be active together. Organize group workouts or go for after-meal walks. It’s a great way to share the season while prioritizing everyone’s health.

Have a Happy, Healthy Holiday

With a balanced approach to diet and exercise, you can enjoy the holidays without compromising your health.

Mindful eating, staying active, and indulging strategically will enable you to enjoy the holiday, while simultaneously setting the stage for a healthy new year. Remember, it’s about moderation and finding a sustainable balance.
