Menopause Beer: Should You Try It?

October 30th, 2017

Newly released menopause beer is far from the best way to address menopause symptoms

A brewery in New Hampshire is making national headlines after introducing a new craft ale aimed at menopausal women. The brew, called Libeeration, claims to help ease menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Created with input from herbalists, the beer contains ingredients like lemon balm, chamomile, motherwort, and other herbs and flowers.

Unfortunately, Libeeration is probably little more than a gimmick. As experts such as the director of the Women’s Health Clinic at the Mayo Clinic have pointed out, none of the herbal ingredients included in the beer have been proven effective for relief of menopause symptoms. Herbal treatments in general are not safe or effective treatments for menopause, given that the ingredients in herbal preparations are not subject to the same quality control standards as a medication would be.

Additionally, drinking alcohol can potentially make menopause symptoms worse, not better. While most experts agree that one drink per day is acceptable for menopausal women, drinking more is associated with weight gain, increased hot flashes, insomnia, skin changes, and osteoporosis.

So What Can You Do to Relieve Menopause Symptoms?

Since self-medicating with “menopause beer” is out, you might wonder what you can do to help relieve hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Here are some tips:

Exercise: Physical activity has many health benefits, including reduction of menopause symptoms. According to the North American Menopause Society, getting physically active can help reduce hot flashes and also promote more stable moods.

Eat Right: Some menopause symptoms like fatigue, skin aging, and osteoporosis have a dietary component. Changing your diet to include more healthy foods that are rich in antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, and other key nutrients will help.

Get Menopause Treatment: The root cause of your menopause symptoms is hormone decline. By correcting this decline, you can relieve your symptoms while also protecting your overall health. At Renew Youth, we offer a variety of menopause treatment options designed to address your unique goals. We can provide comprehensive women’s hormone replacement therapy to restore youthful balance to your body chemistry and combat all your menopause symptoms at once, or we can prescribe measures to address the specific symptoms that are bothering you the most. For example, we offer topical estrogen cream to help fight skin aging, as well as treatments for female hair loss, insomnia, and sexual dysfunction. To learn more, please contact us at 800-859-7511.
