Love Longer to Live Longer (Really!)

Love Longer to Live Longer (Really!)

Experts agree…do the following and you’ll increase both your expected lifespan and your enjoyment of those later years:

  • Get regular exercise
  • Eat a sensible, healthy diet
  • Get regular check-ups and health screenings
  • Have regular sex

Wait…What?

Sex? What does that have to do with living longer?

Okay, regular sex certainly factors into making you feel good at any age. But seriously…does your sex life have anything to do with living a longer, healthier life?

Well as it turns out…yes, it does. And there’s medical evidence to prove it:

  1. Regular sex is good for your cardiovascular health

Having sex gets your heart rate up and makes you breath hard. In other words…it counts as a cardio workout.

Also, your body releases oxytocin during sex. This hormone relaxes you and lowers your blood pressure.

Regular sex (which experts define as at least once a week) has also been linked to reduced risk for heart attacks, stroke, and other cardiovascular health problems.

  2. Regular sex supports your immune system

It’s true…people who have regular sex tend to suffer from fewer illnesses like colds and the flu.

Studies indicate couples who have sex twice a week (or more) have higher levels of immunoglobulin A. Also known as IgA, this antibody is critical for a strong immune system.

  3. Regular sex reduces stress

Your body secretes the hormone cortisol when you’re under stress. Over extended periods of time, excess cortisol can have a negative impact on your immune system.

Oxytocin, on the other hand, de-stresses you and counteracts the harmful effects of cortisol on your body. Same goes for endorphins…those feel-good hormones that are also produced during sex.

  4. Regular sex helps you sleep better

Don’t take it the wrong way if your partner falls asleep after sex.

The oxytocin and endorphins that relax you after sex also help you sleep better. Improved sleep, meanwhile, has a long list of health benefits including improved immune function and reduced stress.

  5. Regular sex helps regulate hormone levels

Production of key hormones like estrogen and testosterone can begin to decline beginning in your thirties.

  6. However, these hormones are boosted by regular sexual activity, as are the benefits they convey.

  7. Regular sex reduces the risk of cancer

For years, researchers have known that sexually active men have a reduced risk for prostate cancer.

Now there’s also evidence that women who have regular sex are less likely to develop breast cancer than less sexually active women.

  8. Regular sex improves your mood

Stress reduction, better sleep, enhanced well-being…the extra oxytocin and endorphins produced during sex make you feel happy and relaxed.

In turn, those good feelings reduce your stress level and improve how you feel about yourself. The result is better long-term mental health.

Active sex life = longer, better life

Clearly, a healthy sex life can go a long way toward a longer and happier life.

Maintaining your sex life starts with maintaining your body. Make sure you get enough sleep. Eat a healthy diet. Get regular exercise.
