Is Garcinia Cambogia Really that Great?

There’s no substitute for diet, exercise, and healthy hormones when it comes to weight loss.

Over the past year, there has been a lot of hype about a new fat-busting food supplement that many celebrities claim helped them to melt away fat without all that pesky dieting and exercise. It’s called Garcinia Cambogia, a fruit that looks kind of a like a tiny green pumpkin. Also known as Malabar Tamarind, this fruit has been used for centuries as an ingredient in foods and traditional medicines throughout its home range of Asia, India, Africa, and Polynesia. Due to this long history of use as well as the results of some modern studies, experts agree that Garcinia Cambogia has no harmful side effects when taken in normal doses. But does Garcinia Cambogia have any real benefits? This is where things get controversial.

Properties of Garcinia Cambogia

Garcinia Cambogia contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), and some scientists theorize that this is the active ingredient that gives it its weight loss benefits. These scientists believe that HCA can block the enzyme that normally turns sugar into fat, so the body is forced to turn sugar into energy instead. The result is more lean muscle and less fat. They also believe that HCA can increase serotonin release in the brain. This helps improve mood and increases the chances you will feel satiated after a meal and not overeat.

Inconsistent Study Results

Unfortunately, the body of research on Garcinia Cambogia is not yet very deep or strong. Most human studies have focused on small groups and short term benefits, and have drawn inconsistent conclusions. One recent article in the Journal of Obesity concluded that Garcinia Cambogia has at best a small effect with uncertain clinical relevance, based on an analysis of nine randomized, double-blind clinical trials in which individuals who took the supplement lost an average of 1 kg more than those who did not.
