Can Men Get Hot Flashes?

January 30th, 2015

Age-related hormonal decline is one possible cause of hot flashes and night sweats.

Hot flashes aren’t just a women’s health issue. Andropause, the male version of the “change of life,” brings many symptoms that are very similar to those of menopause, including hot flashes, fatigue, weight gain, depression, memory troubles, and low sex drive. This makes sense because both andropause and menopause are caused by a decline in the hormones that make men and women look and feel young and sexy.

However, hot flashes are a somewhat rare andropause symptom. Here at Renew Man™, we’ve found that only about 20 percent of the men we help need treatment for hot flashes. If you have been experiencing the sudden sensation that your face or body is burning up, or breaking out in a cold, clammy sweat for no apparent reason, hormonal decline is just one possible cause. Check with your doctor to rule out these other possible causes before calling Renew Man™ for hormone replacement therapy.

  • Cancer or Tumor: Prostate or testicular cancer or a tumor on the pituitary or hypothalamus can cause hot flashes by interfering with the normal production of testosterone. If you have testicular pain you should be especially careful to get a cancer screening.
  • Infections or Medications: Certain infections and medications are known to cause hot flashes in men. To rule out this possibility, ask your doctor about the side effects of any medications you may be taking.
  • Diet: Some men may experience a hot flash as a reaction to MSG. To test for this possibility, keep a diary of your diet and your hot flashes, and make a special note of any hot flash you experience within 24 hours of consuming MSG. Try eliminating MSG from your diet for 48 hours and see if this corresponds with a reduction in hot flashes.

Once the above problems have been ruled out, you can be pretty confident that your hot flashes have an age-related hormonal cause, especially if they are accompanied by other andropause symptoms like hair loss, insomnia, or weight gain.

Find Relief from Andropausal Hot Flashes

The very first thing a Renew Man™ doctor will do when you turn to us for help with hot flashes is test your hormone levels. This will help confirm that low testosterone is to blame for your discomfort. Then, we can develop a personalized treatment plan for you to raise your testosterone to a healthy level and also balance other vital hormones. This will not only bring relief from hot flashes, but also help combat any other andropause symptoms you may be experiencing.
