Best Treatments for Hot Flashes Revealed

November 20th, 2017

Out of a dozen possible treatments for vasomotor symptoms of menopause, learn which ones performed the best

When women stop producing as much estrogen later in life, it does more than just stop their periods. It can also cause many different health issues. One of the most common problems–experienced by 75 percent of women–is vasomotor symptoms. These symptoms are more commonly known as hot flashes and night sweats.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of treatments for vasomotor symptoms of menopause was recently published in the journal BJOG. Researchers used a total of 47 randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of 12 different menopause treatments as compared to placebo:

  • Acupuncture
  • Sham acupuncture
  • Transdermal estrogen and progestogen
  • Oral estrogen and progestogen
  • Tibolone
  • Raloxifene
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
  • Isoflavones
  • Chinese herbal medicine
  • Black cohosh
  • Multibotanicals

Out of all these treatments, only transdermal estrogen and progestogen, oral estrogen and progestogen, isoflavones, and black cohosh were found to be more effective than a placebo at reducing hot flashes and night sweats. The two hormone treatments performed the best.

This makes sense given the mechanism behind vasomotor symptoms of menopause, namely reduced estradiol. Estradiol is the particular form of estrogen that affects the thermoregulatory system. When estradiol declines, the system is altered and women experience hot flashes. To restore balance and eliminate the symptoms, it’s only logical that women need more estrogen.

What This Means for You

Transdermal estrogen and progestogen is a clinical way of saying estrogen and progesterone cream (progesterone is the most important progestogen in the body). At Renew Youth, we offer estrogen cream plus oral progesterone, for the safest combination of the top two most effective treatments for hot flashes.

Our menopause treatment includes personalized doses of estrogen and progesterone based on your lab results and designed to bring your hormones back into a healthy, youthful balance. In addition to including the estradiol your body needs to conquer vasomotor symptoms of menopause, our cream also includes estriol. Estriol is another form of estrogen that helps protect against cancer by ensuring estradiol doesn’t cause unchecked cell growth.
