Exercise Slows Cellular Aging

May 30th, 2017

Researchers have found that getting a high amounts of exercise slows the aging process on a cellular level

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that exercise is a key part of any healthy aging effort. After all, exercise has numerous health benefits, from helping you keep a slim and toned youthful figure to preventing high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, heart disease, and other common problems that tend to crop up with age and a sedentary lifestyle.

But as it turns out, exercise is actually much more powerful of an anti-aging treatment than you might think. At a cellular level, individuals who are highly active will appear about nine years younger than their biological age. This means literally every system in their body is functioning at a younger level.

How is this possible?

Because of the way exercise affects your telomeres.

According to recently published research from Brigham Young University, being highly active is associated with having longer telomeres. In individuals with low or moderate activity, telomere length was not significantly different from individuals who got no exercise at all.

Telomeres are the protein structures that protect the ends of your chromosomes. Young adults will have 7,000 to 9,000 base pairs of DNA in their telomeres. Every time a cell replicates, 25 to 200 of these base pairs are lost. When too many base pairs have been lost, the cell becomes exhausted and dies. This sort of cell death is one of the key mechanisms of aging.

Some of the biggest threats to telomeres include oxidative stress and inflammation, which can come from an unhealthy diet and from a sedentary lifestyle. High levels of physical activity can suppress both oxidative stress and inflammation over time.

Need Help Starting an Exercise Program?

For the purposes of the study, “highly active” was defined as 30 minutes of jogging per day for women (or 40 minutes per day for men) 5 days a week, or an equivalent amount of activity.

If you have not been physically active in recent years, you can’t just immediately launch yourself into a demanding exercise program that will qualify you as “highly active”. Instead, you’ll need to work your way up to the high level of activity associated with slower cellular aging. At Renew Youth™, we can provide products and treatments that will help you on this journey. One excellent example is our injectable nutrient therapy. We offer a variety of formulas to help with different goals such as boosting energy, burning fat, supporting muscle health, and reducing recovery time.
