What’s the Best “Natural” Treatment for Menopause?

October 5th, 2016

Hormone replacement therapy is a highly effective option for relieving menopause symptoms in a natural way.

Are you looking for “natural” ways to relieve the symptoms of menopause? Like many women, you may be reluctant to turn to medications that can be effective in treating individual symptoms, but may come with undesirable risks.

It’s important to remember, however, that “natural” does not necessarily mean “non-prescription.” An effective prescription treatment that relieves menopause symptoms in a natural way is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

How is BHRT natural?

Hormone replacement therapy relieves menopause symptoms by eliminating the root cause of those symptoms, namely hormone imbalance. In other words, it restores a natural, healthy balance to your body chemistry, just like you had when you were younger. However, it’s important to make sure your hormone replacement therapy uses only bioidentical hormones. These hormones come from plant sources, are chemically identical to the ones produced in your own body, and will be absorbed and used in a safe and natural way. This is a marked contrast to synthetic hormones, which are associated with increased risk factors for illness.

Here’s why bioidentical hormone therapy is superior to other “natural” menopause treatments:

Phytoestrogens: Phytoestrogens are chemicals that can mimic the action of estrogen on the body to a limited degree. Phytoestrogens can be found in certain plant foods like soy, leafy greens, beans, and garlic; but just adding these foods to your diet is not an effective substitute for BHRT. You simply cannot get the correct amount of estrogen you need to balance your hormones through diet alone. Additionally, this approach misses other important hormones your body needs, like progesterone and testosterone.

Herbal Supplements: Advocates for herbal medicine often suggest black cohosh as a treatment for hot flashes and mild depression, or red clover to lessen hot flashes and osteoporosis. There are studies that support some limited results from using these herbs. But there are several problems with herbal supplements for menopause. First, each herb is only effective on one or two of the many menopause symptoms you may have (if it works at all). Secondly, herbs do not tackle the root cause of your menopause symptoms, so you will not receive any of the long-term health benefits of having balanced hormones. Third, their effectiveness is rarely long lasting. And finally, it can be very difficult to find safe and potent herbal supplements. Third party testing reveals that many herbal supplements are adulterated with fillers and other ingredients not listed on the label and/or do not contain the promised amount of the active ingredient.

Diet & Exercise Do Matter

Changing your diet to include fewer sugary, processed foods and more whole grains, fruits and veggies, in addition to getting more exercise are all excellent ways to support the effectiveness of your bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. But they cannot replace hormone therapy.
